911 Engine History (Porsche 911)
The 911 engine was an outgrowth of Porsche's highly successful "four cam" racing engines used in Porsche Spiders. The 911 engine was a "clean sheet" design. It incorporated much of the Spiders' reliability features, such as the dry sump oiling system, overhead cam design and air cooling. The 911 engine stayed away from the over complexities of the pure racing engine. The final factor contributing to the successfulness of the 911 engine was the superior execution of the manufacturing process. Never before had a moderately priced sports car engine incorporated the finest in metals and metal working processes available, as evidenced in the forged connecting rods, the sodium filled valves, etc....like jewelry in their detail.

Throughout its own thirty year history, the 911 engine has undergone improvement in details, but basically the 2.0 through 3.6 are the same, attesting to its' excellent first draft design. To add further credibility to this engine design, it has been adopted in the production of airplanes. The next time you see a blimp in the sky, realize there is a good chance that it is powered by turbo Porsche aero 911 engines.

Motor Meister's 911 Porsche Engines
We at MOTOR MEISTER have been committed to rebuilding Porsche 911 engines since 1976 when Lee, our head mechanic, rebuilt his first 911 engine. At that time, he worked cooperatively with some of the best Porsche engine builders in Southern California. Having successfully raced British sports cars since 1967, Lee's objective was to become more competitive. In order to do so, he had to replace most of the major components of the British engine with racing parts.
Since the 911 is constructed with racing components, he surmised correctly that this engine would be more cost-effective in the long run. Did you know that the crankshafts of the highly touted Datsun 240Z cars that were raced so successful in the early 70s had to be replaced after every race weekend?

Do Not Pull The Pin On Your

Porsche 911 Motor!

Don't Do It!

It is hard when you need to spend money on a rebuild, but one simple rule is it will be a lot cheaper to rebuild it “now” before something goes wrong then to wait until something goes wrong and damages parts. One has to understand the difference in the 911 Porsche motor and compared to other cars like Ford or Toyota. See a Porsche 911 motor is made for performance, with factory twin over head camshafts, dry sump system and hi-compression, while a Toyota or Ford is made to goes as far as they can and the quality they can afford which is not that high, compared to a Porsche is a lot cheaper and is made to last then go fast. We usually see two versions of 911 motors coming in to Motor Meister Inc.

#1. Customer’s motor has around 100,000 original miles and has never been upgraded and is starting to leak or smoke or make some noises or loose power. This customer knows it is time to rebuild his motor before something major happens and he knows either pay now or pay a lot more later.

#2. Customer has over 100,000 miles and he has the same problems as customer #1, but he wants to wait and see how many more miles he can get and until he “really really” needs to rebuild his motor, but actually he will need to repair his motor because if he waits for something to go wrong that is exactly what will happen “snap”, “crunch”, “bang” no this is not an early Batman movie, but a motor that will need more then a rebuild, he will need to repair what is damaged and then rebuild it.

So rebuild it now and save money in the long run, but one hint take your significant other to their favorite dinner before you tell them the news, because I would hate to see you have to sell your Porsche for that new family Van, just does not’t feel and look the same as your Porsche

Performance Options

Motor Meister can provide the 2.7 Porsche owner that is in the need for either Performance driving or full out Road Racing with the correct 2.7 or larger motor to fit their specific needs. When it comes to adding performance you need to look and ask yourself three things:

  1. State Smog Laws?
  2. What type of driving?
  3. What your budget will be?

Most worry or get stuck on strictly “how much Horse Power” when you really need to look at what the Porsche will be used for in Performance driving and that will help you in deciding which camshafts? What Port size? How much compression will be needed. See if you go to big with all your choices you WILL have lots of Horse Power but will loose bottom end and this is what makes you go fast from the get go and coming out of turns fast. Motor Meister can go over all their Performance options and prices to fit your specific Performance needs, just give them a call.
