914/6  2.2 liter  GT5R Porsche Club Racer
Jim Dunham's (PCA-SMR Competition Chairman) 1972 914-6 is a beautiful and mean machine. The car was completely rebuilt by himself with help from his friend Dan Kantrow. They built the Porsche race car in only 4 months at his Porsche shop in Michigan. The car shows great quality and detail that has proven itself on the race track as a winner! The car was built in 1989 and converted to E production for SCCA racing. It was successful as a 1.8 liter 4 cylinder, winning the WHRRI road race Championship EP in 1993. The car went through several development periods including electric fan cooling. With the birth of PCA Club racing, the car fell into GT5R allowing up to 2.2 liter displacement. It was logical to build the best 2.2 liter Porsche engine possible, and the SIX cylinder was a natural!

Jim and Lee Marks went over the details concerning what was required to be competitive in the racing field and come up with a plan of attack. The details were given to Roy so that he could come up with an affordable price for a 914-6 conversion (the car was previously running a highly modified 4 cylinder). A deal was made and the motor was built for Jim. The car is doing very well in its new form as a 914-6 race car winner!

Accomplishments this year:

Waterford Instructors Day SMR/PCA:
Fastest time of day!

Gingerman Club Race  July 4/5:
2nd place in class & WINNER of the "Hard Charger Award", passed 12 cars out of a 15 lap race and won a $200 gift certificate along with a bottle of champagne!

Gratten Club Race:
2nd place in class & WINNER of the "Hard Braker Award"!

Meadowbrook Historic Races (which celebrated Porsche's 50 year anniversary!):
The Porsche factory brought 7 of their cars over. Jim's 914-6 qualified under the pole winning 3.6 liter 911 RSR. On Saturday Jim started in the front row (qualifying 2nd out of 24 cars). The entire race was bumper to bumper with Jim almost passing the RSR. On Sunday the race was almost a repeat except that Jim almost passed the RSR in front of the start/finish line coming out of swamp curve. The race is still talked about to this day! Jim finished in 2nd place with the winner being a 3.6 liter 911 RSR. Jim lost by 1/2 a car length. That is a FAST 2.2 and Jim is definitely a FAST driver!
