Motor Meister's Rebuilding Philosophy: We at MOTOR MEISTER have a different philosophy than other rebuilders. We are committed to a high quality engine at a reasonable price and we have numerous resources for research and development to attain this goal. One of the areas that has been instructive is aircraft engine rebuilding. The emphasis there is rebuilding components rather than replacing them because of their high cost. Another area enhancing our knowledge of the rebuilding process is our involvement in racing. In the heat of battle there are time and budget constraints that force alternative solutions. For example, on Saturday racing, you have broken a piston due to missed shift. Your options are:
Yes, Riverside Raceway with its 100 degree weather and long straight aways tested our experiments real quick! What we at MOTOR MEISTER keep in mind is that Porsche engines utilize extremely high quality parts. Lee has reported examining engines with over one-half million miles on them with most of the parts in fine condition! Lee, our head technician, and Roy, our service manager, are California natives with a knowledge of superior outside suppliers that is legendary. Although much machining is done in house, certain highly specialized skills and expertise are occasionally required. For example, balancing is done by a company who does balancing only, and services the Southern California racing fraternity. In this area, we are blessed with the finest high performance industries in the world! The exchange of information and expertise is free flowing, because although we compete for business, we appreciate the value of brainstorming and information exchange within the industry. When to Rebuild Your Engine: The most frequently asked question we receive is: Other indicative factors are the guidelines used by the aircraft engine building industry. Aircraft engine manufacturers utilize a term called T.B.O. -- time before overhaul. These recommendations are established through certified testing of new engines under the watchful eye of the F.A.A. Most engines have T.B.O. values of between 1,000 and 2,000 hours. We have all heard of Porsche engines running well with over 200,000 miles. Unfortunately, these engines are usually driven until something breaks, then they are rebuilt. The resulting invoice could have been significantly less had the engine been rebuilt at the appropriate time. We liken Porsche engines to race horses; they both give a sparkling performance, but must be cared for diligently to avoid self destruction. The Rebuilding Process The rebuilding process starts with the disassembly of your engine. The technician carefully inspects each part as it is removed and notes any unusual wearing conditions. The parts are spread in a staging area for Lee to inspect. The bearings and valves are left in place. Lee then does his inspection, using a log sheet to report his findings. As he puts it, "every engine has a story to tell." He starts with the engine case. He inspects the bearing wear, which will tell him if the engine ran out of oil. He determines if the crankshaft was banging the bearings, if the case had been moved around because of overly worn bearings, or if the crankshaft had been affected? Next, he evaluates the heads and inspects the combustion chambers to determine how the engine was running; lean, rich, or oil burning. He checks to see if the head was loose on the cylinder. His notes in the log sheet are used in consultation with Roy, and the customer to determine which parts will be replaced, remachined or debarred. All parts are thoroughly hand cleaned to assure quality of assembly. Also, all critical oil sealing surfaces are remachined for flatness for a "no leaks engine." The next stop in the rebuilding process is assembling the long block. A specially trained technician spreads the parts for your engine on a "clean table" for a final inspection by Lee before assembly. At critical stages of the assembly process, Lee inspects the progress of the assembly. Special adjustments like valves, cam timing, etc. are double checked by another technician. A leak down test will be performed on the combustion chambers to catch leaks with valves, gaskets, etc. Your engine is under the care of one technician, with oversight by another technician and all under the watchful eye of Lee. After the long block is completed, it is moved to the final assembly area. Here a technician will clean and paint (as agreed upon by the customer) the accessories of the engine, hoses, and hardware that will be replaced as needed. As you can see, there is great attention to detail to assure a quality rebuilt engine. Our engines are shipped worldwide. Three Ways to Have Your Engine Rebuilt:
Horsepower Improvements: While your engine is apart, we can suggest methods for increasing the horsepower. We will consult with you to determine your objectives and performance desires. For instance, |
