Engine Removal Instructions

Carburetor Removal and Installation:

When removing and installing carburetors it is very important to be aware of fire hazards as well as accidentally dropping an object down the throat of the carburetor. This happens quite often and shows up only when you attempt to start the engine and hear the tap...tap...tap.

1. Disconnect the condensation hose from the air cleaner.

2. Unsnap the air cleaner cover and remove the filter element.

3. Unsnap the air cleaner ducts from the top of the carburetor.

4. Disconnect the battery (both positive and negative poles).

5. Disconnect the fuel lines from the carburetor.

6. Disconnect the throttle linkage arms or cups.

7. Remove the nuts holding the carburetor to the manifold using a 13mm open end wrench.

8. Lift the carburetor off of the manifold slowly, and gently lay it to the side.

9. Cover the intake manifold with a paper towel, not a rag or cloth.

10. Be careful with the carburetor as the float bowls will be filled with gasoline.

To install a carburetor do the same as above in reverse, but first check:
1. Clean all old gasket materials off of the manifold base and bottoms. If possible remove all studs and use a sanding block to resurface the bases  for a flat matting surface.

2. Replace all base gaskets with new gaskets. Make sure that the gaskets are the same size so that no blocking occurs.

3. Replace all intake runner gaskets with new and make sure that the gaskets are the same size so that no blocking occurs.

4. Replace fuel filters. You should have two(2)  installed.

5. Use new fuel line hoses.

6. Make sure fuel line clamps are on all fuel hoses.

7. Replace all nuts with nylock nuts and all washers with wavy lock washers.

8. Do not over-tighten the manifold base nuts to prevent breaking off of the ears.

9. Make sure the gas tank is clean so that the carburetors do not become clogged with foreign materials.

10. To install - reverse the steps used in the removal of the carburetor.

 

Distributor Removal and Installation:

Distributor Removal:

1. Turn the engine crankshaft until the piston #1 is at TDC on a compression stroke.

2. Remove the distributor cap leaving the wires connected.

3. Disconnect the primary lead wire from ignition coil terminal 1.

4. Disconnect the vacuum line to the advance unit (if any).

5. Remove the distributor clamp nut (13mm socket with extension).

6. Lift the distributor out slow and gently.

7. If it is necessary to disconnect the wires from the cap, use a piece of paper to make a diagram and mark out everything. Use the inside of the caps with the notch as a starting point.

Distributor Installation:
1. Ensure that the # 1 piston is still at TDC on the compression stroke.
2. Replace the distributor O'ring on the distributor's shaft.
3. Insert the distributor. The rotor must point in the approximate direction. Rotate the distributor housing until the notch lines up with the rotor.
4. Tighten the distributor (nylock nut with a wavy lock washer) that holds down the distributor clamp.
5. Install the distributor cap.
6. Adjust the ignition timing.

Engine Removal Instructions:

Removing your motor from your Porsche is not a hard job, but requires a little patience and an adherence to safety guidelines.If you are not sure of yourself ALWAYS call a professional for assistance.

1. You will be removing the transmission with the motor as one unit.

2. Prop the engine lid so that it can not fall, or remove it completely (there are 4 bolts).

3. Disconnect the battery cables.

4. Drain the motor oil completely. A Porsche holds almost 12 quarts of oil.

5. Drain the transmission fluid.

6. Put the transmission in neutral and chock the tires.

7. Using a screw driver disconnect the hot air ducts underneath the car.

8. Remove the air cleaner and cover the air horns with paper towels. Always use paper towels when blocking engine or transmission holes because they are biodegradable when compared to rags. We have opened many motors and found loose materials in the oil pump.

9. When disconnecting any and all wires make a drawing or diagram showing the colors of the wires or parts and any identifying marks that you may see. Blue prints are not required.

10. Disconnect the cable from the voltage regulator, the silver box on the left.

11. Disconnect the coil wires.

12. Disconnect the fuel lines from the carburetor or Mechanical fuel.

13. Disconnect the throttle linkage from the bell crank (way in the back).

14. Disconnect the oil breather hose from the tank, not the motor.

15. Disconnect the oil pressure sender.

16. Disconnect the oil hose on the right side of the motor.

17. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission.

18. If you have a sport-a-matic disconnect the torque converter oil pump.

19. If you have have a vacuum reservoir disconnect the vacuum hose.

20. Disconnect the starter cables (make sure that the battery cables have been disconnected).

21. Remove axle shafts from transmission. Use a hammer to hit them head on in order to loosen them. If this is not successful then try heat.

22. Loosen and remove the clutch cable. Use care because it is spring loaded.

23. Disconnect the ground cable from the transmission. Buy a new one before replacing.

24. Disconnect the back-up light switch on the tail of the transmission. If it is cracked buy a new one before replacing the engine.

25. Disconnect the throttle linkage from the transmission.

26. Wash your hands for the next step. Remove the center-tunnel cover at the rear of the back seat area.

27. Remove the center lock pin bolt, and pull the shifter towards you to pull off the stick.

28. Block (on both sides of the car) the front and back of the front tires.

29. With a floor jack lift the drive train to take weight off of the mounting bolts.

30. Remove the bolts holding the rear engine support. If the rubber supports are cracked make a note to change them.

31. Remove the bolts which secure the transmission mount. Check the rubber supports and replace if cracked.

32. Lower the engine and transmission carefully while balancing it on a jack and carefully pull the jack towards the rear.
