Racing Forged Pistons for Porsches

piston1-010699.gif (24687 bytes)Motor Meister's forged racing pistons are machined out of a solid block of aerospace aluminum alloy.

Most factory Porsche pistons are cast in a mold much in the same way Jell-O is made. They are a high quality product but when Porsche wants extra strength and reliability, they always use forging. Examples are very early "S", all turbo and 3.6 models, and every R.S. and R.S.R.

Casting is weaker because the mixture of ingredients in the liquefied aluminum needs to be poured into a mold, resulting in a product which is more porous and brittle than the product which is obtained by forging. Porsche turned the automotive world "on its ear" with the introduction of the "forged alloy wheel" back in the 1960's. Lee, at Motor Meister, remembers race drivers being killed from cast wheels breaking apart. Some race organizations even required all cast wheels to be crack tested once a year. The second step in building a quality piston is the method used to machine the piston. Lee, Motor Meister's engine director, started racing in 1965. He stipulates that the "ring stack" (ring thickness and placement) be the same as in the R.S. or R.S.R. which gives good sealing and low drag.

The clearances in the cylinder are very important. Porsche uses four different cylinder materials plus different diameters. These factors determine how much wall clearance the piston should have. The skirt length determines the weight and how much noise comes from the engine. The track engine needs to be as light as possible and noise isn't an issue. The street  or "street and track" engines can have a few grams of extra weight in order to assure a quiet engine by having the piston skirt longer. The dome of Motor Meister's pistons have excellent deep valve pockets to ensure valve clearance for high lift camshafts and an added protection when over-revving the engine.

race_piston.jpg (10776 bytes)Every MotorMeister piston is light weight and has extra strength piston pins. Plus,we use spiro lox pin clips (4 per piston) to ensure that a pin never comes loose.

Give MotorMeister a call and discuss your requirements with Lee. He will determine how you're going to use the engine, what type of gas you use, what camshafts and ignition system you have, what altitude at which you will drive or race, and if your cylinders, case or heads have been cut down. All of these factors will determine what the compression ratio your MotorMeister piston should have.

Motor Meister's Performance and Racing Pistons for the Porsche 911 & 914-6 are the perfect compliment to our current stock of Performance and Racing line.
