Driving Fundamentals Introduction All aspiring race drivers are confronted with a problem; they do not get enough practice time before the race! Most other sports afford ways to 'hone' the skills needed to excel. The old adage is so true; "Practice Makes Perfect". The glaring fact to show how race driving is even more dependent on practice is all the older race drivers who excel well into their forties and fifties. It is because pure athletic ability is only 50% of the equation to be a good race driver. A young lion in his twenties was asked about the older race drivers in stock car racing. His comment was, "I'm spending twenty-five percent of my energy and mental concentration on being stressed out when going 200 miles per hour", whereas the old pros are relaxed at those speeds. Mario Andretti was a front runner well into his fifties, as well as A.J. Foyt! Also, there was Juan Manuel Fangio who, on a worldwide basis, is considered to be the greatest racer of all time. He was winning Formula One races in his fifties! Far too many times young race drivers spend too much money and time on the latest "hot set up" for the engine or chassis. I remember seeing one of those pro-celebrity races where the pros start in the back of the pack in an ill handling street car and within a few laps they are up front! Dan Gurney was a once asked how he got to be so good. His comment was that he practiced all the time while driving anything he was in. He knew precisely where each one of his tires was in relationship to the road surface to within a "one inch" variation. He, like all other "greats", had developed a system of practice to keep those skills honed to a sharp edge. Remember that even the "greats" had at times months between races This book will, with your dedication, help develop your skill in car control, physical conditioning under adverse circumstances, and mental awareness necessary to excel in this most demanding of sports. Before long you will become "one" with any car. Chapter 1- Race Driving Fundamentals
